Vent: Used to freehand all my damper installations, now I swear by a jig

I spent years eyeballing damper placements in Portland chimneys and ended up redoing at least one in five because the seal was off. Then an old timer named Joe showed me his simple plywood jig for marking bolt holes. Has anyone else switched to a template system for dampers and noticed fewer callbacks?

Is a 20% redo rate really that big of a deal though? Feels like you're overcomplicating something that worked fine with a little practice.

Have you actually tried just pushing through the first 20% to see if it gets easier? For me, I found that once I got the hang of the basics, the redo rate dropped way below 10% after a few weeks. Maybe give it a solid month before deciding if it's really a problem.
