Dropped $180 on a "certified" jade bangle in Shanghai and my friend from Kunming laughed at me
Bought it at a shop near Yuyuan Garden two weeks ago, guy swore it was real Hetian jade and even showed me a little card saying so. My friend who grew up in Kunming took one look and said the color was way too even, real jade never looks that perfect. Took it to a jeweler here and he said it was glass filled with dye, worth maybe $12. I mean the guy at the shop was so smooth about it, no way I was the first tourist he got that week. Anyone know a real way to spot this stuff before handing over cash?
Honestly, buying jade in a tourist spot and expecting a bargain is kinda on you, not the guy. Every shop near Yuyuan Garden is selling to people who will never come back, so of course the price has a story built in. A "certified" card means nothing over there, anyone can print one, and your friend from Kunming laughing doesn't mean she could've done better in the moment either. Real Hetian jade at $180 would already be a steal, so the math alone should've told you something was off. Sometimes you pay for the fun of the hunt and the story, and $180 for a two week souvenir isn't the worst deal in the world.
