Heard a Chinese guy at a truck stop say something about his VPN that spooked me

I was grabbing coffee outside of Omaha last Tuesday and overheard a Chinese trucker talking on the phone about how his VPN stopped working after the last update from the provider. He said it showed a "blocked by GFW" message and now he can't check his WeChat or Baidu maps. Anyone else heard about VPNs getting cracked down on harder recently in China?

Honestly, that "blocked by GFW" message is exactly what I saw on my own VPN last month, so that story hit close to home. I use mine mainly for WeChat too and it just stopped working overnight, no warning or anything. Ngl, I had to switch providers twice in the last few weeks because the first two got blocked within days. Tbh, it sounds like they're really ramping up the crackdown, especially if truckers are getting hit out in the middle of nowhere like that.
