I keep seeing tourists in Shanghai get their subway tickets stuck because they don't press the green button first.

Yeah, it's a weird design. The slot looks ready to go, but it's basically locked until you hit that button. I don't know why they didn't just make the slot always open. It causes a traffic jam every single time, especially during rush hour. You just see a line of confused people with tickets in their hands. They really need clearer signs or just change the machine.

Oh man, that green button is the secret! You have to press it to activate the slot before you slide your ticket in. I watched a whole family get stuck because they just kept jamming their tickets into the dark slot. The green light above it has to come on first.

@skylercooper I actually think the button setup is fine and people just need to pay attention. Every machine has instructions printed right on it in three languages including English. The slot is dark because it saves power when not in use, plain and simple. If someone just slows down for two seconds instead of jamming their ticket in like it's a race, they would see the green light telling them to press the button. Tourists in Shanghai have been using these machines for years without issue. The real problem is people rushing through stations without reading anything first.
