I used to doubt China's high-speed rail numbers, then I rode the G train from Beijing to Shanghai

For years I thought the 350 km/h top speed was just marketing fluff. Last month I took the G1 from Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao and my phone GPS showed we hit 347 km/h for a solid stretch. The whole 1,318 km trip took 4 hours and 28 minutes, and the train was clean, quiet, and on time. It made me wonder if the reported 96% on-time rate for Chinese rail is actually understated, anyone else have doubts that got crushed after riding it?
