My 800 RMB Chinese language app subscription, best money I ever spent or total waste?

Back in March I paid 800 RMB for a year of that popular Chinese learning app with the green logo. I figured it would finally get me past basic survival Mandarin, but six months in I can order dumplings fine yet still freeze up when the taxi driver asks me a simple question. On the other hand, my coworker spent the same amount on an in-person weekend class in Shanghai and she can already chat with her in-laws. So is it the tool or the learner? Has anyone here actually gotten fluent from an app alone, or do I need to bite the bullet and find a tutor? Just curious what worked for you all.

ugh girl SAME. i paid almost the same for that app and all i got was an expensive streak and the ability to say "i want this one" at restaurants. meanwhile my friend did a cheap italki tutor thing for like 2 months and shes actually having real chats. i swear its not you, the app just doesnt push you to think on your feet.
