Read an article last year about foreign companies getting hit with big fines for not using proper network setups over there. Their local staff kept telling management it was fine, but then the government audits came. Spencer's right, the firewall will lock you out fast without a VPN. The boss is probably just repeating what the local IT guy said to save money. It's a huge risk for the whole company's data.
