My uncle who lived in Shanghai told me I was overthinking the "rice cooker is essential" thing and he was right, I don't use it once.

He said just get a regular pot and a lid and watch the water bubble, so I tried it for a month and my rice comes out fluffier than it ever did in that $60 Zojirushi I gave away.

Yeah, I read something about this a while back actually. There was this whole thing in some cooking blog I stumbled on where a chef said the same thing, that rice cookers are basically just a fancy pot with a timer and it's the heat control that matters, not the gadget. I mean, it makes sense when you think about it, people have been making fluffy rice in regular pots for like, thousands of years. So your uncle is probably onto something, idk why we all get so convinced we need a special machine for it. Maybe it's just marketing getting to us, you know?

Told my wife the same thing. Now she’s mad I got rid of the rice cooker.
