Overheard a Chinese grandma in Flushing scolding her grandson for bargaining at a fruit stand

She said 'you don't haggle over five cents, you bring shame to the family.' Made me rethink the whole 'save every penny' mindset I grew up with in America. Anyone else have a moment like that where culture clashed with what you thought was normal?

Whoa, over five cents? I mean, I get the principle of not being cheap, but five cents is basically nothing. That's wild. Like, I've seen people argue over a dollar or two at a garage sale, but five cents? That's not even a penny candy anymore. Maybe it's just me but I feel like that grandma was way more worried about the family looking bad than the actual money. I respect that kind of pride honestly.

Never thought of it that way but yeah, you're right. Changes my mind completely.
