Rant: getting a Chinese phone number as a foreigner took me 3 weeks and 4 trips to the same China Mobile branch in Chengdu
Nobody warns you that your passport alone isn't always enough at some branches, even though the rules say it is. I stood in line at the Chunxi Road location for 40 minutes on a Tuesday, and the clerk kept pointing at a form I couldn't read, then said I needed a local guarantor. Ended up having my landlord come with me on trip number four, and it got done in 15 minutes once she signed one paper. If you're moving to China, ask a local friend to come with you the first time instead of trying to do it alone. Has anyone gotten one without a guarantor, and if so which city and which carrier?
Yeah the guarantor thing got me too, they never tell you upfront. What finally worked for me was going to a smaller China Unicom shop instead of the big China Mobile branch, the guy there just took my passport and did it in like 20 mins. Feels like it's all about which clerk you get that day honestly.
