Serious question, my phone map failed in a Beijing hutong and I had to ask for help

I was trying to find a specific tea shop in a narrow Beijing hutong last Tuesday when my map app lost signal completely. An older local man saw me looking confused, walked over, and gave me perfect directions in simple Mandarin. Has anyone else had a tech fail in China that led to a surprisingly good human interaction?

My maps crashed in Shanghai last year and this lady walked me two blocks to my hotel. Honestly felt safer than following a blue dot.

That "safer than following a blue dot" part is so real. We put way too much trust in these apps. A person helping you actually sees the world, not just some data. My phone has led me into dead ends and weird places more than once. A local actually knows what's up. Tech fails all the time but basic human help is pretty solid.

Oh totally, I read a blog post about this exact thing, and @andrewt41's story really proves it.
