That lamb skewer in Xi'an wrecked my itinerary for a full day

Back in 2018 I finally made it to Xi'an, the city I'd read about for years. I was walking near the Muslim Quarter around 7pm, and this little stall had these amazing looking lamb skewers. The smell was incredible, so I bought five for 15 yuan and ate them right there. Within two hours I was hunched over in my hostel bathroom regretting every bite. I spent the next day sipping plain congee from a shop two blocks away, and the owner kept asking if I was okay. Turns out my Irish stomach just wasn't ready for that level of spice and street handling. I learned to always have a backup plan for food, like bottled water and some crackers from a convenience store. Has anyone else had their trip derailed by a local dish they couldn't handle?

Classic move, trading a day of sightseeing for a bathroom floor bonding session with a lamb skewer. At least the congee guy became your accidental tour guide, that's the real cultural exchange right there.
