Trying to get my old hukou records sorted out from my hometown in Sichuan took almost two years.

Two years is a long time but honestly that's just how it goes with old records. Seen way worse delays for simpler stuff. Maybe they had to dig through actual paper files in some back room. Not saying it's right, but it's not exactly shocking either.

Geez, reading that actually shifted my thinking on this stuff. I used to just assume it was lazy clerks or bad systems, but hearing about the two-year wait for real paper records makes me wonder how many of these delays are just people trying to find dusty files in a basement somewhere. A buddy of mine had to wait 18 months for a simple property deed update from a small town office, and he figured they just forgot about him. It's frustrating as all get out, but I guess sometimes it's less about incompetence and more about the sheer mess of old record keeping.

Used to think that was just how things worked. Two years for paperwork is insane.
