Vent: My friend in Chengdu made me rethink the whole "western food is better" thing

Had a chat last Tuesday with my buddy Liu who moved back to Chengdu after 5 years in Chicago. He said people there think American food is just "sweet bread and sad salad," and I laughed at first. But then he showed me a video of his grandma making mapo tofu from scratch, 45 minutes of pure technique, and I realized I've been defending frozen pizzas and drive-thru burgers my whole life. We don't have anything that takes that kind of care in my family's kitchen. Has anyone else had a moment where a Chinese friend or relative made you feel basic about your own food culture?
