Warning: I used to think WeChat Pay was just a convenience app until I lost my wallet in Shanghai last summer

For 2 years I relied on cash and cards everywhere in China. Thought everyone scanning QR codes was just being trendy. Then I got pickpocketed on the Nanjing Road subway platform - lost 800 yuan and my ID. Had to borrow a stranger's phone just to call my hotel. Now I link my bank card to WeChat and Alipay both. Took me 30 minutes to setup but I feel 10x safer. Anyone else have a wake up call about mobile payments over there?

Actually you can add money to WeChat Pay without linking a bank card.

Cameron684's right about adding cash at convenience stores, but linking a bank card is way faster when you're in a jam. Did the pickpocket incident happen during rush hour or was it one of those quieter moments where you let your guard down? Just trying to figure out if there's a pattern to watch for next time.
