WeChat pay at a tiny noodle shop saved my whole trip in Chengdu

I flew into Chengdu last month without a local SIM or any cash, and this hole-in-the-wall place only took QR codes. A customer helped me set up WeChat Pay in like 5 minutes using my passport, and suddenly I could buy 12 yuan bowls of dan dan mian everywhere. Has anyone else figured out an easier workaround for foreign tourists doing small payments in China?
