Why does nobody talk about the hidden fees on WeChat Pay top-ups?

Last month I tried to add 500 yuan to my WeChat Pay using a foreign card and got hit with a 15 yuan service fee plus a weird exchange rate markup. I went to a convenience store in Guangzhou and the cashier told me to just give them cash instead and they'd add it for free. Took me three years to figure this out and I feel kinda dumb. Has anyone else found better ways to avoid these fees?

Cash swap works best. Convenience stores in Shenzhen do it too.
