Let my 66 Mustang sit under a tarp for 2 winters in Columbus and the rust taught me something
I pulled the tarp off last month and found bubbles under the paint on the rear quarter panel, right where the tarp had been trapping moisture against the metal the whole time. A guy named Ray at a body shop on Cleveland Ave told me he sees this every spring, and that a cheap breathable cover beats a plastic tarp hands down. It cost me $180 for him to cut out the rot and weld in a patch, plus a week without the car. Anybody got a cover they actually trust for outdoor storage, or am I better off just renting a garage spot?
Wait, Ray only charged you $180 to cut out rot and weld in a patch? That seems crazy cheap for body work, especially on a quarter panel. Around here you can't even get someone to look at rust for that. Maybe I need to drive to Cleveland Ave. That said, two winters under a plastic tarp is rough, that thing basically becomes a sauna every time the sun hits it. A garage spot is the real fix if you can swing it, covers just slow the damage down.
