My grandpa said to never use dish soap on a car, and I ignored him for 2 years
My grandpa ran a body shop in Erie for 30 years and always said dish soap strips the wax and dries out old paint. I figured he was just being old fashioned, so I used it every couple weeks on my 1969 Chevelle for about 2 years. Last spring I noticed the roof and hood looked chalky and dull no matter how much I buffed. I finally took it to a guy named Ray who does paint work in town, and he asked what I was washing it with. When I told him, he just laughed and said the same thing my grandpa did. Cost me $900 for a respray on the hood alone. Anyone else got a car care tip from an old timer that you blew off and later regretted?
The part about "chalky and dull no matter how much I buffed" hit home for me. I used to roll my eyes at the old guys saying dish soap ruins paint, figured soap is soap right? Then I watched my buddy's truck fade to this weird flat gray after a couple summers of Dawn washes and I got it. The wax is what keeps the sun off the paint, so once you strip it every wash, the paint is just baking out there with nothing on it. My neighbor has been telling me for years to use real car soap and I finally switched, wish I had listened sooner. Sorry about the 900 bucks, that stings.
