My electric bill dropped by 40% after the new insulation went in
I just got my bill for last month and it was $78, down from $130 the same month last year. I live in a drafty old house in Boise and finally sealed up the attic and walls this past fall. It's crazy how much energy was just leaking out, and how much less my heat pump has to run now. Has anyone else seen a big drop from a single home upgrade?

My old place in Spokane was so bad I used to joke the insulation was just cobwebs and regret. My first winter bill there was almost two hundred bucks, and I was just heating the great outdoors. Seeing your drop makes me wish I'd done something about it instead of just wearing two sweaters inside all the time.

That "drafty old house" line really hits home. I always thought insulation was a minor fix, but seeing numbers like yours proves it's a game changer. I'm looking at my own attic differently now.

My attic insulation was basically just the old pink stuff from the 80s, maybe six inches thick at best. I added a proper blown-in layer to get it up to about sixteen inches, and my next gas bill dropped by almost forty bucks. @umaf44, I totally get the two sweaters thing, I did that for years! The real trick is checking your attic hatch too, because a lot of heat escapes right through that thin piece of wood. Sealing that gap with some weatherstripping made a huge difference for me. It's honestly one of the best things I've ever done for this old house.
