My solar panel quote was 40% higher after I mentioned a rebate
I was getting quotes for a 6kW roof install in Austin and casually asked one contractor about the federal tax credit. He suddenly added $3,200 in 'paperwork fees' to the estimate. I called three other companies and all of them did the same thing, so I went with a local co-op that gave me a flat price upfront. Has anyone else seen prices jump when you bring up incentives?
That "$3,200 in paperwork fees" line hit close to home. I used to figure the tax credit was just free money off the top and the price was the price, no matter how you sliced it. Then I asked one guy in San Antonio about the 30% credit and his quote went from $14,800 to $18,900 between Tuesday and Friday, same panels, same roof. Now I ask for the flat cash price first and only mention rebates after they put it in writing.
