Showerthought: My neighbor in Phoenix called my compost setup 'pathetic'
He said my small bin was just baking in the sun and not breaking down right. I moved it to a shaded spot and started adding more browns, like shredded cardboard. Now it works way better and I'm keeping more food waste out of the landfill. Anyone else get a piece of advice that fixed a simple home project?

Glad you turned that criticism into a win.

My brother-in-law told me my first raised garden bed was just a glorified sandbox. He was right, the soil was way too dense. I mixed in a few bags of peat moss and some compost, and the next season my tomatoes actually grew.

...and honestly I think that neighbor probably did you a favor. Most people overcomplicate composting like it needs to be some perfect science. But here's the thing - if you're in Arizona or any hot dry place, direct sun just cooks everything and kills the microbes. Your setup wasn't pathetic, it just needed location and balance. @alicelopez is right that criticism can lead to wins, but sometimes the cheap plastic bins from big box stores work better than any fancy setup. Way less fuss, way more finished compost.
