TIL someone told me my mulch depth was killing plants. I used to pile it on 6 inches deep.

Client in Farmington Hills called me out. Said her perennials were dying. I blamed the weather. She said check the mulch. I had it like 6-7 inches deep around everything. She showed me online how 2-3 inches is max for beds. Deeper than that suffocates roots. Changed my whole approach this season. Anyone else get called out on something basic you thought you had figured out?

Honestly that same thing happened to me a few years back. Read somewhere that mulch 2-3 inches is the sweet spot because anything deeper creates this wet soggy layer that rots roots. I was doing about 5 inches on my hydrangeas and they all turned yellow and dropped leaves. Felt like a total idiot when I figured it out. Now I measure it every time I refresh beds.

Wait, isn't it supposed to be 2-4 inches not 2-3?
