Can we talk about how long I ran a tool with the wrong insert?

Ngl, I was running a finish pass on some 316 stainless last Tuesday and kept getting this weird chatter that I could not figure out. I checked speeds, feeds, even the coolant pressure, but nothing helped. Turns out I had been using a CNMG432 insert rated for steel instead of the proper stainless grade for like 6 months straight. The tool rep came in to show us a new line of inserts and he pointed it out on my machine within 30 seconds. I felt like an idiot but also kinda proud my parts still passed inspection. Has anyone else gone that long using the wrong tooling without knowing it?

Did you not check the insert grade before installing it?

Grant gives me "did you try turning it off and on again" vibes honestly. Six months of wrong inserts and still passing inspection though? You might be the luckiest machinist alive or that tool rep just missed a sale for half a year. Either way you should frame that insert as a trophy for the break room. Maybe hang it next to the "I survived chatter" certificate I assume you got from the boss.
