Just realized the coolant at the new shop in Dayton is way too thin for our aluminum jobs

I was over at Precision Tooling in Dayton yesterday and noticed their coolant mix looked like water, which is a huge problem for heat dissipation and tool life on the long aluminum runs we all do. Has anyone else run into shops cutting corners on coolant concentration?

Ever think it was just a bad mix? I used to assume thin meant cheap, but jones.alice has a point about the new synthetics.

Yeah, "way too thin" is a gut punch when you see it. It feels like watching someone set money on fire with the tool wear that causes. Hard to believe a shop would risk their spindle time like that.

Way too thin" might not be the whole story. Some of the newer synthetic coolants are designed to look almost clear and run at lower concentrations, but they still protect the tool. I'd be more worried if they were using an old-school emulsion and it looked watery. Did you happen to catch what brand they were using?
