Ran 40 parts past the probe on Tuesday and caught a 0.012 drift before it scrapped anything
Operator on nights, Mike, dialed in a 4140 run on the Okuma and we started seeing finish chatter around part 22. Pulled the probe data and the X axis was drifting 0.012 over the shift, which turned out to be a loose way cover bolt letting chips pack in. Retrammed it, reran the offsets, and we finished the 40 piece order with zero scrap. Anyone else keep a probe log on long runs or do you just trust the tool wear comp?
Keeping a probe log has saved me more times than tool wear comp ever will, since comp only tracks what you tell it to track. Once wrote down every 10 parts on a long 17-4 run and caught a Z drift from thermal growth that comp would have never flagged. Sounds like you got a solid night guy in Mike too, that 0.012 catch before scrap is the kind of save that pays for the probe right there.
