Spent $780 on a Renishaw probe for my Haas 3 years ago and I still say it was worth every penny
Everyone on here keeps saying touch-off probes are a waste of cash for small shops but I went from scrapping 2 or 3 parts a week on setups to almost zero, so has anyone else actually tracked their scrap rate before and after?
Tracking scrap before and after was the smartest thing I ever did. Ran the numbers for six months before I bought my probe and six months after, and my setup scrap went from about 4 percent down to under half a percent. That does not sound like much until you add up what those parts cost in material and time. On one job alone, a batch of aluminum housings, I was eating 3 parts a week in setup and after the probe it was basically zero. The probe paid for itself in about five months just on saved material, not even counting the labor. People who say it is a waste probably never wrote down their scrap numbers to begin with.
