The Friday I crashed a rougher and learned more than in 3 years of button pushing
Two Fridays back at the shop in Rockford I was roughing a 4140 block and got cocky, bumped the feed on our Haas VF-4 from 40 to 65 ipm because the air cut sounded light. Carbide insert let go about 20 seconds in, threw the part, and somehow the toolholder survived. Our setup guy Marcus just looked at it and said 'the machine tells you when it's happy, you gotta stop talking over it.' Now I listen to the cut for a full pass before I touch anything. Any of you got a sound or chip color rule you actually trust over the load meter?
Man, that Marcus line is the real lesson right there. When you say you listen for a full pass now, what are you actually listening for, steady pitch or the little waver when the insert starts to rub? I can hear a bad cut when it's already too late but I still can't tell happy from about-to-snap.
