Thought quick change tooling was a sales gimmick till I timed my setup on a 500 part run
I ran the same job on two identical Haas VF2s at my shop near Dayton last month, one with standard cat40 holders and one with quick change. The standard machine ate 4 hours of tool changes across 500 parts. The quick change machine did it in under 40 minutes, which I did not believe until I watched the stopwatch myself. That is 3 extra hours of spindle time I was giving away on every run like this. I still think the holders are overpriced at around $200 each, but the math does not lie for high mix work. For one off jobs I would not bother, but if you run batches over 100 pieces the payback is quick. Anyone else track their actual tool change time, or am I the only one who never bothered till now?
