I think pair programming is overrated for total beginners

Last week in my local python meetup, everyone kept pushing pair coding as the only way to learn. But when I tried it with a friend, we spent 40 minutes arguing about variable names instead of actually writing anything. Has anyone else found that going solo with a simple project like a budget tracker for three months taught them more than any pairing session?

Those 40 minutes arguing about names is exactly how you learn to let things go.
