PSA: the free intro class I sat in on in Dayton was all theory, here is what actually got me past hello world
Last Saturday I drove 25 minutes to a free intro to coding class at the library branch in Dayton and walked out feeling dumber than when I went in. Two hours of slides about what an algorithm is and where code lives, and we never typed a single line ourselves. There were maybe 15 people there and the guy next to me, retired, kept asking when we start writing code, and the teacher just said next time. I get that basics matter but I do not learn by hearing the word variable 40 times, I learn by breaking something and fixing it. What finally worked for me was a free site that made me print my name in a tiny Python window on day one, and yeah it was one line, but I had made a thing. So now I check any beginner class by asking one question before I sign up: how many minutes until I touch the keyboard. Has anyone found a class or meetup that gets you typing in the first 10 minutes, or is that just not how these things go?
