A guy at the counter in Seattle said he only uses a scale for his morning coffee now

I was waiting for my order and heard him tell the barista he started weighing his beans about six months ago. He said he used to just scoop from the bag, but now he measures 18 grams every single time. It made me think about how much of my own routine is just guesswork. Do you think a cheap kitchen scale is worth it for this, or is that overkill?

Totally get it, I did the same thing last year. My coffee was so inconsistent before I got a scale, just random scoops from the bag. Now I weigh 20 grams for my french press every morning and it's a total game changer, way better flavor. A cheap scale is totally worth it, like under twenty bucks.

Yeah, my buddy did that too after his coffee kept tasting sour. He got a ten dollar scale and found out his scoops were all over the place, like 15 grams one day and 22 the next. He said fixing that was the biggest upgrade he ever made, way bigger than buying a fancy grinder.
