Blade grinder mention at a weekend brunch triggered a full scale intervention

I was at a casual gathering and made an offhand comment about still using a simple blade grinder for my coffee. Two acquaintances, who are deep into specialty coffee, immediately launched into a simultaneous lecture on uniform extraction and grind quality. It became so awkward that the host started loudly offering everyone second helpings of quiche to cut the tension. Consider this a warning to gauge the room before revealing any perceived coffee shortcuts.

But beyond the extraction talk... did they imply your coffee was somehow inferior, or was it more about the principle? Those conversations often mask a weird elitism that can make anyone feel defensive over their morning routine. It's a shame when gear shaming overshadows just enjoying a cup with friends.

My old French press probably has mold growing in the spout because I never clean it right. So if Nancy's crew wants to nerd out on extraction, they'd have a field day with my sad setup. I'm the guy they warn you about in those gear talks, honestly.

Harperthomas what if they were just nerding out, not gatekeeping?
