I finally had my trusty French press shatter on me this morning
It was the one I got from a thrift store in Austin like 4 years ago, and I swear it made the smoothest coffee. But when I went to rinse it after my brew, the handle just snapped off clean in my hand. Hot water went everywhere on my counter and I almost dropped the whole thing. I had to grab a towel real quick and clean up the glass pieces. Now I guess I need to find a replacement, but I don't want to pay $40 for one of those fancy insulated ones. Has anyone else had a favorite brewer break out of nowhere?

@blake302's right about the steel ones being near indestructible.

The real problem with those glass french presses isnt just that they break, its that they break in the worst possible way - while youre holding hot liquid. Get yourself a stainless steel one off Amazon for like $25. Yeah its not as pretty, but I dropped mine on tile floor last month and it just bounced. No cleanup, no burned hands, no losing your morning coffee routine for a week. The glass ones are basically ticking time bombs once they hit that 2-3 year mark, and thrift store finds are even more unpredictable since you dont know how many times its been dropped before.

Man that sucks. Same thing happened to my Bodum last year, handle just gave out while I was washing it. If you don't want to spend $40, check out the glass ones from IKEA or a local home goods store. They're usually around $15-20 and work just as well for daily use. Just make sure to hand wash it gently and you'll get a few years out of it.
