My French press carafe shattered on the kitchen tile this morning, but I managed to salvage the brew with a clean bandana and a big measuring cup.

What's your go-to method for a quick filter when your main gear fails?

Always used a paper towel in a pinch. Saw someone use a clean sock once, changed my whole view. Now I keep a cheap pour over cone as a backup.

Saw a barista use a napkin once, @murray.grace. Total game changer.

My mom's old coffee sock from the 70s lasted through two camping trips before it finally gave out. That said, using a clean bandana is a pretty solid trick, but I'd worry about the dye bleeding if it's not pure white cotton. @murray.grace, have you ever actually tested a sock for any weird flavors or just hoped for the best? I tried a paper towel once and it made the coffee taste like cardboard, so I'm skeptical of anything that isn't food grade. A cheap plastic pour over cone is a smart backup, I keep one in my camping gear for exactly that reason. But I'm curious if anyone has tried a clean handkerchief with no pattern on it, that might be the safest bet.
