After tamping with what I thought was GENTLE pressure, I locked the portafilter in and hit the brew switch, only to have hot coffee and grounds erupt like a volcano. Are we exaggerating the drama of a minor kitchen mishap? Espresso machines are notoriously finicky, and over-tamping is a common beginner mistake. A countertop geyser sounds more like a learning moment than a genuine disaster. Unless your machine is now broken, which you didn't mention, this seems like standard espresso troubleshooting. I've had worse spills from overfilling the milk frother, and it never felt like volcanic activity.
