My quest for the perfect espresso crema resulted in a countertop geyser

I was testing a new puck prep method involving a distributor tool and perhaps too much enthusiasm. After tamping with what I thought was GENTLE pressure, I locked the portafilter in and hit the brew switch, only to have hot coffee and grounds erupt like a volcano. It coated my apron, the cabinets, and even my lucky mug in a fine, bitter spray. Honestly, that machine has NEVER shown that much personality before.

Are we exaggerating the drama of a minor kitchen mishap? Espresso machines are notoriously finicky, and over-tamping is a common beginner mistake. A countertop geyser sounds more like a learning moment than a genuine disaster. Unless your machine is now broken, which you didn't mention, this seems like standard espresso troubleshooting. I've had worse spills from overfilling the milk frother, and it never felt like volcanic activity.

Standard troubleshooting? Nah, that was a full-on espresso explosion.
