PSA: That $80 coffee bean sampler box was a trap

I ordered one of those monthly sampler boxes from a roaster in Portland last fall because I wanted to try all their single origins without paying full bags. Big mistake. First off, they send you like 4 ounces of each bean, which is barely enough for two mornings of pour overs. Second, half the beans were roasted way too dark and tasted like ash, even though the website said medium. I pulled one bag out that had a roast date from 3 weeks prior, so it was already stale by the time it hit my door. I dropped $80 plus shipping and ended up drinking maybe 3 decent cups out of the whole thing. The worst part is I could have walked into my local shop in Columbus and grabbed 3 fresh 12oz bags for about $60 and actually enjoyed all of them. Has anyone else had luck with these sampler subscriptions or is it always a gamble on freshness?
