Visited a tiny coffee cart in Portland and it changed how I see light roasts

I was at a little cart on SE Division Street last weekend, and the barista insisted I try their Ethiopian light roast (she called it a 'filter coffee'). I've always avoided light roasts, thinking they'd be too sour. But this one was super fruity and sweet, nothing like I expected. It made me realize I've been missing out by sticking to my usual dark roast. Has anyone else had a light roast that totally surprised them?

You mentioned the barista called it a 'filter coffee'. That's actually a specific brew method, not a roast level. You can have a light roast as espresso too. The fruity notes you got are from the beans themselves, not just because it went through a paper filter. A good grinder and even extraction matter more than the machine for bringing out that sweetness.

My buddy had the same "too sour" fear until a Kenyan light roast.
