Chose a trigger warning over a speaker ban at our forum, students called me out anyway
Back in 2021 at Ohio State, I voted to keep the controversial historian with a warning label instead of cancelling him, and the student senate said I was enabling hate, but at least no one got silenced that night, so has anyone else picked the middle path and still caught flak from both sides?
Figured out pretty quick that both sides hate the middle path because each one wants you to pick them. Did the same thing at a city council meeting in 2022, kept a guy's slot but had staff read a content note first, and the left called me a coward while the right said I was caving to snowflakes. What saved me was writing down my reason before the vote so I could point back to it instead of getting dragged into the fight every time. Say it once, plainly, like "we don't ban speech here but people deserve a heads up," then stop explaining. The ones who scream loudest usually aren't the ones who show up to the next meeting anyway.
