Chose the alumni panel over the protest speaker at State, got blamed by both sides

Last month my school had a thing where they invited this guy who wrote a book saying some pretty harsh stuff about campus activism. Meanwhile the alumni association was hosting a career panel the same night. I had to pick one for a class assignment, so I went to the alumni one because my advisor hinted it was better for networking. The next day two separate groups in my poli sci class called me out for 'supporting the wrong message' even though I just wanted a resume boost. The protest speaker ended up getting his mic cut off 20 minutes in, and honestly I still wonder if going there wouldve been the more honest choice. Has anyone else had to choose between a boring safe event and a controversial one and then deal with fallout from people who didnt even go?
