Hot take: My cousin's invite got pulled and now our family chat is a war zone
My cousin's college yanked an invite for a speaker she helped plan, and our family group text EXPLODED. It's wild how a campus choice can tear a family apart over what free speech really means. When did colleges deciding who talks become a dinner table fight?

Ever ask what the speaker was gonna say?

In 2019, a college in Ohio pulled a talk because of online backlash. But did anyone ever actually read the speech draft or just react to headlines? finley_rivera67 has a point about schools protecting students (and that's important), but how do we know what's really 'awful' without hearing it out? Sometimes the 'hate' label gets slapped on things that are just uncomfortable, you know? I mean, if we're gonna cancel talks, we should at least have the full text to judge.

Yeah but the whole free speech thing misses the point sometimes. A college isn't a public street, it's their platform to lend out. If the speaker was gonna say something awful or spread hate, pulling the invite is just them taking care of their students. The family fight sucks, but maybe they should ask why the speaker got the boot in the first place, not just fight over the idea of a talk.
