I used to think campus speech codes were about safety, then I read the one at my old school
I used to shrug off speaker bans at colleges because I figured the school just wanted to keep things calm. Then I found the actual policy from my old school printed in a student handbook from 1998, and it said any event could be shut down if three people filed a complaint about feeling discomfort. That is not safety, that is a veto button for whoever yells the loudest. Now I look at every controversy differently and ask to see the written rule before I pick a side. Last fall at a panel in Columbus they pulled a speaker 20 minutes in because of one complaint, and nobody could point to the rule they broke. Anyone got a link to their own school's policy so I can compare how these things are actually worded?
Same thing happens at work and in HOAs, one loud complainer can shut down anything while everyone else just sits there. It's never about the rule, it's about who's willing to make a fuss.
