Invited both a sitting congressman and a student activist, the crowd made it obvious who had the better argument
At Ohio State last semester, the school brought in a Republican congressman and then a student activist from the ACLU to speak about campus speech policies. The congressman read from a script and dodged questions, while the activist answered student challenges directly for 45 minutes. Same room, same crowd size, and the difference was night and day, people stayed for the activist but peeled off early for the politician. Has anyone else noticed that students respond better when a speaker actually engages instead of just reciting talking points?
My cousin sat through a city council meeting last month where half the officials read from printouts while one guy just talked to people, and the difference was like watching two different meetings, most folks left early or checked out during the scripts. It seems like everywhere, not just schools, people can tell when someone is actually listening to them versus just performing.
