Paid $75 to hear a speaker at my school and it backfired in a way I didn't expect
So my student group at Ohio State paid $75 out of our own pockets to bring in a speaker last month because the school wouldn't fund anyone with a controversial take. He was supposed to talk about online censorship but spent the whole hour ranting about parking tickets and his ex wife. Half the room walked out and the other half was just confused. I'm out $75 and our group looks like we can't pick speakers, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has paid out of pocket for a campus event and totally regretted it?
The part about him ranting about parking tickets and his ex wife is brutal, especially when you dropped actual cash hoping for something real about online censorship. That kind of bait and switch stings more when it comes out of your own pocket instead of the school's budget. Honestly your group probably looks fine, anyone who was in that room knows the speaker was the problem, not you.
