PSA: I saw a free speech wall at Ohio State get torn down in 20 minutes flat
I was on the OSU campus in Columbus two Saturdays ago helping my nephew move into his dorm, and we walked past the Oval around noon. A student group had set up what they called a free speech wall, basically a big plywood board where anyone could write anything with markers. Within about 20 minutes, a crowd showed up, someone wrote something about a speaker who got disinvited last spring, and then a guy in a hoodie just started ripping the whole board apart with his hands. Campus security stood maybe 30 feet away and did nothing. My nephew said the same group tried this back in April and the board lasted 45 minutes that time. I get that a plywood wall is not the same as an actual event, but watching people physically tear down other people's words kind of stuck with me. Has anyone seen one of these free speech walls actually survive a full day on a campus?
