Thought I lost the mic before our free speech panel, then found it in my backpack 2 minutes before doors
We booked a speaker from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education for a free speech debate at the student union in Boulder, and 90 minutes before start time the venue's sound system died completely. I drove to a Guitar Center on Pearl Street, dropped $75 on a used Shure SM58, and got back with 10 minutes to spare. Turned out the real problem was a tripped breaker, so the panel went fine without any gear at all. Has anyone else had a campus event almost fall apart over something this dumb?
That tripped breaker thing gets everybody at least once. I ran sound for a bunch of campus events back in the day and the first rule we had was check the power before you check anything else. Learned that the hard way when a poetry slam went silent and I spent 20 minutes swapping cables while the actual fix was a reset button on the wall outlet. Also good call keeping the SM58, that thing will outlive us all, so it wasn't $75 wasted even if you didn't need it that night. My advice for next time is get there an hour early and literally test every outlet and breaker you plan to use, and know where the panel is in the building. Half of event disasters are just power problems in a costume.
