Found out Batman has only been in print for 85 years and I did the math on my own collection
So I was at my local shop in Boise last Saturday flipping through a back issue bin when the owner handed me this old fanzine from 1989 that had a timeline of every Batman appearance ever printed. I always figured Batman started around the same time as Superman, but I never actually sat down and did the math on the whole thing. The fanzine said Detective Comics #27 came out in May of 1939, which means as of this year the character just crossed 85 years of continuous publication, and honestly that number hit me harder than I expected. I went home and counted my own long boxes and I have 214 Batman issues total, which sounds like a lot until you realize that's less than one percent of everything ever put out. What really got me was the fanzine writer guessing that no single person on earth owns a full run, not even the big collectors, because of how many variant covers and regional printings exist. I sat there for like an hour just staring at my shelf thinking about how much I've spent chasing 214 issues out of thousands. Anyone here ever try to tally up what percent of a character's history you actually own? I feel like I might be way behind or maybe right on track, no clue.
Wait, nobody owns a full run?? That is wild to me. You'd think some rich guy with a vault somewhere would have every single issue by now. 214 is honestly more than I'll ever get so don't feel bad.
