Hot take: The 'no gatekeeping' rule at my local shop in Cincinnati is actually hurting new fans.
Last month, a new reader asked me for a starting point and I suggested a specific 1980s arc, but the owner cut in and said 'anything is fine, just pick what looks cool,' which left the kid overwhelmed and he walked out without buying anything.

Yeah, that "anything is fine" advice is so unhelpful.
