Lost a $300 variant cover because I didn't check the bag
Picked up a rare Jim Lee variant at a shop in Portland last Saturday, drove home all excited, and found a crease running right down the middle because the bag had a bent backing board. I threw the board in the trash and sealed the comic in a proper sleeve with a new board, but the damage is done. Anyone else make a rookie mistake with storage supplies?

Hold on, I gotta push back a little here. Checking the bag is step one, yeah, but the real rookie move was tossing the bent board in the trash without flattening the comic first. A bent board doesn't always crease the book if you slide a new board in behind it and press the sleeve flat for a few hours. You might have saved it if you took the time to smooth the book against a flat surface before sealing it up. I've done the same thing with a beat up backing board, and I just let it sit under a stack of heavy trades for a day. The crease relaxed enough that it barely shows now. So the bag was a problem, but your reaction sealed the damage.
