My buddy at the comic shop gave me a weird look when I asked for a specific variant cover

Last week, I was at The Panel Shop downtown trying to find the 'Inferno' #1 variant with the black and white art. I've been collecting this run for about 3 years, ever since the first issue came out. I asked the guy behind the counter, Mike, if they had it in stock. He just kind of stared at me and said, 'You know that's a 1 in 50 retailer incentive, right? We only got one copy and it's already spoken for.' I felt like such a newbie... I didn't even know what those ratios meant. I just liked how the cover looked. It made me wonder how many other collectors are just buying what they think looks cool versus chasing the rare stuff for value. Do you guys actually pay attention to those ratio numbers, or do you just go for the art you like?

Got the same look asking for a glow-in-the-dark cover last month. It's just cardboard with a picture, man. I grab what looks cool on my shelf and ignore the math. The shop guys take it way more serious than I ever will.

My local shop had that same variant behind the counter for $80. I just buy the regular cover because I like the story inside. The whole rarity chase feels like a different hobby to me.
